Exit and Emergency Lighting

Exit and Emergency lighting must be tested regularly in order to maintain battery life. Non
testing of lights has been known to shorten the lifespan of lighting batteries

WHEN

(frequency of testing)

  • Bi-Annually and Annually

WHAT

(is required to be tested or verified)

  • Exit path of egress is lit and directed by exit lighting
  • Lights are mounted correctly and to AS2293.1
  • Lights are able to run continuously without external power for not less than 90 minutes

HOW

(is required to be tested or verified)

  • Visually inspect condition and brightness of all lights during 240v supply
  • Disconnect the power source, typically via test switch or via circuit breaker
  • Visually inspect condition of brightness and serviceability under battery operation
  • Verify lighting still operating correctly following the 90min testing period
  • Ensure correct operation of test switches where fitted, and that test switches are fitted
where required by the building’s certification version of the AS2293.1 (needed after 2005)
  • Restore power and ensure all lights have power present indicator lit
