Detection (SOU)

SOU (Sole Occupancy Unit) Detection consists of smoke and/or heat alarms intended to provide an alert to persons inside a single occupancy unit such that they may seek to escape the presence of a fire before it takes hold.

WHEN

(frequency of testing)

  • Annual

WHAT

(is required to be tested or verified)

  • Detection is working
  • Audible alert is working
  • Power source is present
  • The age of the unit is less than 10 years from manufacture
  • Adequate detection is in situ for the location
    Interconnectivity is functioning

HOW

(What method is used)

  • The unit is visually inspected for condition or damage
  • Test smoke is used to activate the alarm.
  • Where audible alert is low, sound pressure can be measured.
  • The alarm manufacture date is visually inspected
  • The area of protection is assessed to ensure coverage
