Passive Fire

Passive fire relates to the measures documented as access panels, lightweight construction, fire seals, penetrations and fire resistant glazing etc. Passive measures are all design aspects of a building that do not actively address a fire situation, however provide containment of a fire to a specific fire compartment within the building’s design and construction.

WHEN

(frequency of testing)

  • Annually

WHAT

(is required to be tested or verified)

  • Passive asset register is available and complete
  • All penetrations for services are in accordance with the BCA and standards
  • Access panels are installed to permit visual inspection of passive fire assets
  • Lightweight construction is correctly installed and undamaged

HOW

(is required to be tested or verified)

  • A specialised partner is engaged to ensure that
  • Sufficient access panels and visibility is available to visually inspect all penetrations (some concessions can be made where consistent approaches are evident)
  • All service penetrations between fire compartments are correctly protected by fire sealing collars or other methods are of the correct type and specification for the type
    of penetration
  • All lightweight construction, wrapping and other penetration sealing methods are constructed of compliant materials and
    installed correctly
  • No new penetrations or changes have occurred since the previous inspection that are not adequately protected
